Selling Fear

** Believe it or not, this post was started last week of August 15th and was never completed… **

As is the norm with me (and to the detriment of my WordPress Blog) I disappear for weeks and don’t comment on the flavour of the day/week… There are many public personas out there that are more than willing to comment on the goings-on of the country – and while I savour some good intellectual debate – the landscape is still littered with too many idiots for my voice to be heard. Or in this case, words to be read…

The subject of this post comes from a lesson I leant a long time ago about politicians, but more eloquently put by a fictional character in The American President – President Andrew Shepherd in describing the tactics of his opponent said,

“He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who’s to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections”

If you analyse every single thing a politician says during a campaign, it’s all about selling fear. Fear them, trust us is the coded message in every speech and hook line to get your vote. But if you didn’t know it, it seems like a campaign is still on, only this one is against labour and their representatives. I have never been a member of a trade union for my entire working life, but it doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the influence they had on the quality of lives of many men and women. I also appreciate that when it comes down to it, the only power a worker has is to withhold his labour… Will there be a national strike? Knowing my countrymen? Uh, no… The only time we take to the streets is on Carnival – the end.

So we have the negative ads on TV and radio, we have the purveyors of doom and gloom who are selling fear of an economic collapse, and then you have some level-headedness and clarity coming from some well-known personalities. Afra Raymond on CNC3 sometime last week during the morning show was excellent in his explanation of the much needed property tax overhaul and implementation. Ronald Ramkissoon was also on the spot telling government to curb their expenditure (something that has the US government where they are today with no solution on how to fix it). And in keeping with this same theme on expenditure, Afra had the magic equation:

[Expenditure of Public Money – Accountability – Transparency = Corruption] *** Afra was kind enough to point out that I had it wrong in my original post (now corrected as per his comment below)

And that’s where I ended… In all that has happened in the last week, there’s nothing I can add except the meltdown of the Attorney General, Anand Ramlogan:

In a briefing Ramlogan had said, “The declaration by His Excellency was in response to intelligence received by security agencies which I cannot share with you but which I can assure you averted a crisis.” How many politicians before Anand have used “issues of national security” to institute draconian measures “to protect us”? How many of you still believe that bull tata?

The link below is a post that will be three years on Sunday. Prescient, wasn’t it?

  1. Hello to you, but the actual equation I am promoting is

Expenditure of Public Money – Accountability – Transparency = CORRUPTION

I do agree that the way you have laid it out is also instructive, but the point at this stage in our campaign is to offer the public a simple and foolproof way to tell when bobol and commess is taking place…

    Thanks for your supportive comments.
