Tales From A Strange Land

One of the biggest losses this country ever had was when David Rudder migrated to Canada… (Talk about Trini to the bone…) I heard a snippet of one of my favourite songs – The Madman’s Rant – from the album Tales from a Strange Land and I was searching high and low for the lyrics. (Bandi! I look to you for help on these sort of things!) Sadly, not much has changed since it was written in 1996…

Anyway, here’s a work in progress:

Vote for we and we will set you free

Anywhere you go somebody chanting to we

Somebody promising jobs for all

Somebody renting gun to make other people bawl

But somebody promising more police car

Somebody going to take the country far

Somebody putting all the bandits away

He say if dey do the crime dey go damn well pay!

But somebody promising human rights

While somebody shouting to put out dey light

The mortuary full with little Trinidad boys

Now a bullet whine and put an end to dey doy (?)

Now dey lying cold for their Mama to mourn

Dey Nike gone, dey gold teeth gone

Yuh see dey want dey pocket full with blue blue silk

Dey want dey statue drinking full cream milk (?)

The little red silk is not their true friend

The blue one has two extra nought on the end

So a tag on their door is dey ticket to hell (?)

Well look where we reach, well, well, well, well…

Ah hear a madman bawl as he spread out on ah wall

He say This is it! This is it! This is it I’ve been hit!

No time to give up brother! No time to quit!

Chant of a madman…in this tale from a strange land…

The chant of the madman is the only salvation…

Ah say the chant of a madman… in this tale from a strange land…

The chant of the madman oi is the only salvation…

Anywhere you go somebody chanting to we

Vote for we and we will set you free…

  1. i usually check http://guanaguanaresingsat.blogspot.com for lyrics first… funny enough Rudder left for a better life for his kids… one of whom seems set on a hip-hop lifestyle… and was basically unknown to his other so-called Trini neighbours…

here is the link… i had this album too… not sure where i misplaced it…

    Thanks much
