Only In Trinidad…

So, I was on the road today after a long hiatus. As everyone who reads this blog knows – even occasionally – I hate to drive here…

First sign of my ‘exciting’ day was a Coast Guard ambulance 5CG 7 ,or something like that, literally pelting his way west down the highway to where it merges into one lane just before Goodwood park with sirens blaring. The speed he was coming down on me I didn’t have a clue where to go. Luckily, for both of us, there was nothing coming towards us from the opposite side. Five minutes later he was heading back east with sirens blaring again. Seriously? I know that there was no accident or anything further down the road, much less to pick someone up and return to where he came from!

Finished in Carenage and heading back into Port of Spain in the typical Wrightson Road traffic when sirens again heading east. This time I was able to climb the median and get out of the way, but it was a different ambulance. The kicker was the taxi behind (HCF 4199) chasing the ambulance using the same cleared path…

Reached by the market traffic lights and veered to take the left lane only to see a stalled vehicle straddling both left and centre lanes. Guessed the two guys looking under the hood couldn’t push it a bit more to the side to save their and other people’s lives. The best was just a ways further up to the entrance to the market… A guy was actually dragging an over-sized pallet across three lanes of a highway! Not a 4 X 4 pallet, a huge pallet… across three lanes… Really? So you wouldn’t get hit by a car because of the pallet?

Last but not least – a pickup truck trying to reverse on the highway after a bag of plastic bottles flew off his tray and landed under the overpass close to the market… I made it back home safe. Thank you God for protecting me from all these mad people and I was only on the road for 3 1/2 hours. Do you thing Colm Im-blah’s cameras will help?
